My son, Rhys, has been coached by Alex for nearly 3 years and, during this time, Alex has helped develop him into a well-rounded young man both on and off the bike. From a cycling point of view he has coached Rhys from a relative novice into a highly competitive under 19 road racer, competing at State, National and International levels as well as being highly competitive on the Australian NRS. Alex designs a bespoke daily program, tailored to meet Rhys’ developmental needs, upcoming races as well as longer term goals whilst, at all times, ensuring he is not over trained and is maintaining a balanced life. His coaching is scientifically based/monitored and his program is clearly explained to Rhys, who responds well to understanding why and what he is required to do.
Alex understands, and fully embraces, the importance of education and life beyond the bike. He designed Rhys’ training schedule around his senior school studies thus ensuring neither was compromised. This aspect of his coaching was paramount to me as a parent. When times get tough, Alex is always available to talk to Rhys– often putting things into perspective, encouraging him, tweaking the program if required and being a great mentor. Alex always considers Rhys’ psychological wellbeing in all aspects of his coaching.
We have nicknamed Alex ‘Super Coach’ – he ticks all the boxes for us! Importantly, he has taken the time to understand and ‘get’ Rhys, and this is a sure way to get the best out of him. Thank you Alex for all you have done for Rhys – his success is a testament to you – both as a person and a coach.
When I was 16 my passion for cycling was growing so naturally, I wanted to become more serious and competitive. I sought Alex’s advice to progress in the sport. He helped me understand the path to racing and together we formed my goals along with the strategies to achieve them. Alex values rider to coach communication so we regularly spoke in person, while riding together and on the phone which helped me to always stay on track. Alex is a coach who understands the importance of tailoring a program me that works for each rider depending on their circumstances. He was able to provide relevant and technical feedback whilst keeping the sport fun. Alex coached me through year 11 and 12 of school and really helped me to keep an academic and athletic balance. I would recommend Alex to any young rider who is looking to gain direction with their cycling. Former Endeavor Athlete Declan Gammack
As parents of an under 17 junior who’s made cycling his focused sport, we couldn’t be happier with Alex as a coach. The coach-athlete partnership is really important and this is where Alex has been excellent.
The individual approach and time he’s taken to get to know our son’s strengths and areas for improvement has made a big difference to both his performance and overall perspective. Alex’s attention to the school-training balance has also been really valuable.

Over the past 10 or so years Alex has been a training partner, colleague, friend and now coach. Having raced at a national level previously, training under some of the nations top coaches, I was initially hesitant to begin training with Alex upon my return to the sport, not wanting jeopardize a friendship. Alex’s grace and the result of his athletes speak greater volumes to his skill and passion as a coach, than what I can type here. It is a truly rare to find a coach who genuinely cares, but also has a deep understanding of physiological principles and the real world application. Alex’s philosophy’s around the training-work-life balance are nothing short of wise beyond his years. He has taught me a lot of lessons about myself both on and off the bike along the way. If you are looking for a coach who believes in holistic training and longevity look no further. As an exercise physiologist I couldn’t recommend Alex enough. His care and diligence is second to none.
